We would all like to think of the United States as a country that follows the rule of law and conducts free and fair elections. Yet, state and federal law enforcement agencies too often look the other way when corrupt political machines rig elections. This is shameful and unacceptable.
But that’s what happened when Florida election officials illegally destroyed all the ballots cast in our 2016 primary against the ethically-challenged Debbie Wasserman Schultz. State and federal prosecutors fell silent, even after Brenda Snipes, the Broward Elections Supervisor and Wasserman Schultz crony, admitted under oath in sworn videotaped depositions to illegally destroying the ballots – and even after the Florida Circuit Court ruled in our public records lawsuit that Snipes had thereby violated state and federal criminal statutes.
If election rigging and ballot destruction can happen so openly and without consequences here, it can happen almost anywhere. When mass ballot destruction goes unpunished, it only serves to normalize election rigging in the future. Florida is sure to be a key battleground state in 2020, and so we must demand integrity, justice and the rule of law in our elections now.
That’s why I’m asking you to make one telephone call today. Please call Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at (850) 717-9337 (Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm EST), press 1 to speak with a staff member, and ask the Governor to appoint a special State Attorney tasked with the following:
- To investigate and prosecute Brenda Snipes and other former and present Broward election officials for their illegal destruction of all ballots cast in the August 30, 2016 primary – felonies under state law, punishable by up to 5 years in prison for each violation.
- To investigate why Michael Satz, the Broward State Attorney, has refused to prosecute this open and shut criminal case – a case with overwhelming evidence of illegal conduct, including Snipes’ sworn videotaped admission of wrongdoing. We should know why Satz refuses to prosecute such an easy case of obvious official misconduct.
For the past two years, I have heard almost non-stop from voters across the political spectrum asking why Broward County’s illegal destruction of ballots has gone unpunished. Then last month, federal officials announced that two unnamed Florida counties were hacked in 2016, allegedly by Russians. Unfortunately, the failure of state and federal law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute Broward’s official misconduct contributes to concerns that the ballots may have been destroyed to cover-up some underlying election rigging.
Enough foot-dragging already. We must demand integrity and justice in our elections.
When official corruption is so flagrantly ignored, we have no rule of law and no representative government. Instead, we will have a fake democracy, a fake republic. Please urge Governor DeSantis to appoint a State Attorney to pursue justice without fear or favor.
